APRIL 2026
Joining various countries populated by Catholic practitioners around the world, April 2026 marks the official period of the
Lenten season in the Philippines. However, along with this observance comes a crisis that won’t go unnoticed. Miles away from
the country is a war that, regardless of one’s point of view, has caused casualties among innocent lives. Undeniably, this war
had, almost overnight, initiated a series of unfortunate events affecting millions on a global scale.
Being no exception to this domino effect, the looming uncertainty over the Philippines is further intensified by the ripple effects of this global conflict, particularly as manifested by the ongoing oil crisis. The rising fuel prices have led to increased costs of transportation, food, and basic necessities across the country. In response, the entire country leaned heavily on legal mechanisms in the form of regulatory measures, subsidies, and policy interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of this crisis. However, while necessary, these responses often fall short of alleviating the deeper anxieties experienced by ordinary Filipinos.
The strain caused by the war abroad and economic instability at home highlights the limits of legal mechanisms in addressing human distress. While laws can regulate prices and provide relief measures, these cannot fully restore peace of mind and the dwindling hope prevalent among Filipinos. It is in this context that the Lenten season becomes especially meaningful. The Lenten season offers not only spiritual refuge but also a guiding moral compass, helping individuals navigate uncertainty with renewed purpose. It calls for a deeper reflection on one’s role in society, especially in times of crisis. For the legal community, faith, now more than ever, serves as a catalyst for a more profound commitment to justice. In particular, a commitment that goes beyond legal compliance and instead embraces active and meaningful participation in nation-building.
Strengthening faith amid uncertainty requires intentional effort. It involves trusting God’s providence while also acting responsibly within the bounds of the law. It calls for patience in times of scarcity, honesty in economic dealings, and compassion toward those who bear the brunt of the crisis. These are virtues that reinforce both spiritual resilience and social stability. Ultimately, the harmony between law and faith lies in their shared pursuit of justice and human dignity. While the law seeks to address external order, faith nurtures the inner strength needed to endure and transcend hardship. During this Lenten season, as the Philippines grapples with the effects of global conflict and the oil crisis, individuals are invited to deepen their faith by remaining steadfast in ethical principles and taking part in fostering a more just and compassionate society.
In the face of uncertainty, faith does not eliminate hardship but rather transforms the way we confront it. Relying on both law and conscience, the Lenten journey becomes a steady path towards hope and resilience, which effectively renews our sense of responsibility and deepens our commitment to the common good.
As we journey through these uncertain times, this Lenten season invites us to remember that hope is not a mere fleeting wish but rather a living reality rooted in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Precisely, as expressed in 1 Peter 1:3, we have been given a “living hope” through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. In moments of doubt and unwitting anxiety, let us be guided by hope that endures beyond suffering, uncertainty, and even death itself. It is through this hope that we are allowed to renew our strength, steady our hearts, and inspire us to move forward with quiet confidence, knowing that no darkness can overcome the promise of a new life. In the risen Christ, hope is not only something we cling to, but the very force that sustains us and leads us forward.
